Sanctuary of the Beata Vergine della Fossetta
At the end of Corso Cavour stands the Sanctuary of the Beata Vergine della Fossetta (Blessed Virgin of the Hollow), founded in 1654. It was built at the behest of Count Alfonso II and his wife Barbara, to a design by architect Gian Battista Negri. The building follows a Greek-cross plan, featuring a central dome, cupola and three altars.
Behind the main altar lies a fresco depicting the Blessed Virgin of the Hollow, which tradition attributes to Lelio Orsi, painted in 1564 for a small chapel that once stood on the edge of the namesake hollow. This earlier chapel, believed to have been erected sometime between 1554 and 1564, is today recalled by a small pillar located about 250 metres from the Sanctuary, along the road leading to Campagnola. Unfortunately, later, coarse 19th-century overpainting has compromised the original stylistic qualities of the fresco.
