Monument to Antonio Panizzi

Located in square Piazza Garibaldi, the Monument honours Antonio Panizzi, a distinguished scholar, patriot and senator from Brescello, regarded as the father of modern global librarianship. From 1856 to 1866, he served as Director of the British Museum Library, shaping it into one of the world’s leading cultural institutions.

The Monument, created by sculptor Ettore Ferrari, was inaugurated on October 13, 1912, during a solemn and widely attended ceremony. Today, the local Municipal Library - housed in the San Benedetto Cultural Centre, with its spacious halls and splendid vaulted ceilings - bears his name.
