La Golena: Brescello's Floodplain

Brescello's floodplain is shaped by the winding course of the River Enza, which -in its final stretch, just before flowing into the Po- runs almost parallel to the Great River. Dominating the landscape are broad poplar groves and steep sandy banks which provide shelter for bird species such as the Kingfisher and the European Bee-eater.

Following the road Strada della Cisa, visitors can reach two former quarries, now abandoned and filled with water, which serve as habitats for various waterfowl, including the Great Crested Grebe, cormorants and mallards. At the entrance to this route into Brescello’s floodplain, you’ll find the “Madonna del Borghetto” votive shrine - a small monument featured in one of the most memorable episodes of the literary saga of Peppone and Don Camillo (“Don Camillo, Monisgnor but not too much”).
